Yoga FAQ

yoga certificate smallWhere did you train to be a yoga teacher and who did you train with?

I am often asked this question. I trained in London  with The British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) who are the governing body for yoga in the UK. The BWY are widely considered to offer the highest form of training in the UK and many teaching schools seek their accreditation.

My initial 500 hour training took three years to complete. Since then, I have studied courses in pregnancy yoga, yoga for children, yoga nidra and meditation in both the UK and India.

All physical yoga (asana/posture) is Hatha yoga and is the third limb of eight of Rāja Yoga. Rāja yoga is a system and succession of steps which can lead to spiritual liberation.

Styles of hatha yoga vary greatly and I prefer to integrate many of them into my classes. I draw from Vinyasa flow, ashtanga, kundalini and Iyengar. I love teaching pranayama (breathing techniques), meditation and yoga nidra (deep relaxation), yin and restorative yoga.

If you have an injury or a condition that may affect your ability to do physical postures, make sure to let me know before the class begins and I can modify the postures to suit your needs.

If you have a serious medical condition, It’s advisable to consult your GP before you start taking yoga classes.

prenatal-yoga Can I do yoga if I’m pregnant?

See your GP before starting yoga. Generally, during the first trimester, take it easy. If you don’t already have a yoga practice, this is not the time to start. If you already have a yoga practice, favour gentle classes and restorative yoga. The second and third trimesters are a great time to do yoga!

Postures can be modified so that the abdomen is not restricted in any way. No deep twisting, deep backward bends or abdominal strengtheners. Sun Salutations can be adapted. Standing postures and those that open the pelvic floor and hips and focus on breath awareness are recommended.
